Writers Behind Barbed Wire

By Lewis Leary

In response to Emerson Behind Barbed Wire* (January 18, 1968)

To the Editors:

Lewis Mumford is probably not correct in everything he says in his comments on what scholarship has done to Ralph Waldo Emerson, but he is so nearly so that he deserves the thanks of all of us who continue to think of literary studies as humane as well as aseptic.
