To the Editors:
I write to express my deep appreciation of Steven Marcus's extraordinarily sensitive and scholarly review of my book in The New York Review of Books. Naturally, I was pleased with his more than favorable reaction to my work but, even more than this, I appreciated learning about literary matters I didn't know before and which I wish I had known before writing the book.
