The Ouija board is a simple contrivance: a piece of heavy white cardboard about eighteen inches high and twenty-four inches wide, printed with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers from 1 to 0, the words YES and NO, and the symbol &. To consult it, most inquirers today employ a plastic triangular pointer that glides easily on three felt-tipped feet. The seekers sit opposite each other or (more often) side by side, and each places one hand lightly on the pointer. If they are lucky (or, possibly, unlucky), it will presently begin to move of its own accord, spelling out messages from the spirit world.
