Faust: Still Striving and Straying from the November 25, 1976 issue

To the Editors:

Could there be a “Lücke” in Harry Levin’s formidable erudition [NYR, November 25]? He does not mention Peter Salm’s Faust translation for Bantam (1962). It was both idiomatic and poetic, a rare combination. Alas, it did not “linger a while,” since it was too fair and is out of print.
