Dove sei gita,
Che qui sola di te la ricordanza
Trovo, dolcezza mia? Più non ti vede
Questa Terra natal: quella finestra,
Ond’eri usata favellarmi, ed onde
Mesto riluce delle stelle il raggio,
È deserta. Ove sei, che più non odo
La tua voce sonar, siccome un giorno,
Quando soleva ogni lontano accento
Del labbro tuo, ch’a me giungesse, il volto
Scolorarmi? Altro tempo. I giorni tuoi
Furo, mio dolce amor. Passasti. Ad altri
Il passar per la terra oggi è sortito,
E l’abitar questi odorati colli.
Ma rapida passasti; e come un sogno
Fu la tua vita. Ivi danzando; in fronte
La gioia ti splendea, splendea negli occhi
Quel confidente immaginar, quel lume
Di gioventù, quando spegneali il fato,
E giacevi. Ahi Nerina! In cor mi regna
L’antico amor. Se a feste anco talvolta,
Se a radunanze io movo, infra me stesso
Dico: o Nerina, a radunanze, a feste
Tu non ti acconci più, tu più non movi.
Se torna maggio, e ramoscelli e suoni
Van gli amanti recando alle fanciulle,
Dico: Nerina mia, per te non torna
Primavera giammai, non torna amore.
Ogni giorno sereno, ogni fiorita
Piaggia ch’io miro, ogni goder ch’io sento,
Dico: Nerina or più non gode; i campi
L’aria non mira. Ahi tu passasti, eterno
Sospiro mio: passasti: e fia compagna
D’ogni mio vago immaginar, di tutti
I miei teneri sensi, i tristi e cari
Moti del cor, la rimembranza acerba.
Where are you gone?
For memories, O sweetness of my life,
Are all I find of you. This countryside
Where you were born knows you no more. That window
Where once you used to talk with me is empty,
Reflecting the sad glitter of the stars.
Where are you? For the echo of your voice
Is heard no more—whose distant accents once
Falling upon my ears, made me turn pale.
That was another time. Your days are over,
My sweet beloved. You have passed. To others
Is given now to go about the land
And find a dwelling in these fragrant hills.
But swiftly you passed by, and all your life
Was like a dream. For you went dancing forth,
And joy shone on your brow, and in your eyes
The sure imaginings and light of youth,
And then Fate struck you down, and you lay still.
Alas, Nerina! for the old love yet
Reigns in my heart. And if at any time
I take my way on days of festival
Or go to watch the dancing, to myself
I say: “Nerina, now you deck yourself
No more, nor go to dance or festival.”
When May returns, and lovers greet their girls
With caroling and gifts of flowering branches,
I say: “Nerina, never more for you
Returns the spring; and love returns no more.”
Every fine day and evey blossoming bank
I look upon, feeling my heart rejoice,
I say: “Nerina now feels joy no more,
Nor looks upon the fields or on the sky.”
For you have passed away, my everlasting
Sorrow—have passed, and made companion
Of all my fair imaginings and all
My tenderest feelings, in the sad and dear
Moods of the heart, a bitter memory.
