To the Editors:

The National Wildlife Federation’s advertisement in your October 27, 1986, issue was misleading. Would-be contributors should be aware that although the ad’s bold print reads “Endangered Species” and “Save a Place for Wildlife,” the Federation’s mission is to promote hunting and trapping. Along with the National Rifle Association, the Federation participates in a lobbying coalition which fights gun control and promotes blood sports. I began researching this connection after reading a description of a youth camp offered by the Connecticut Wildlife Federation, an affiliate, which listed courses in rifle handling, hunting, and trapping.

Why subsidize the gun and blood sport lobby when there are many fine organizations which work “only” to protect endangered species and wildlife habitat?
