In response to:

The Rebel from the May 17, 1990 issue

To the Editors:

I have discovered that in my essay review “The Rebel” [NYR, May 17], I repeated a mistake made by John Herbert Roper, author of C. Vann Woodward, Southerner, about the early travels of C. Vann Woodward. In 1927 Woodward did sail to Europe as a seaman on a Dutch freighter. But he went no further than Holland. Woodward made his first trip to the Soviet Union in the summer of 1932, the same summer he lived with the Jewish family in Berlin.
