She Didn't Play For Clyde

By Andrew O'Hagan

In response to What is Scotland?* (November 20, 2008)

To the Editors:

My family is in several respects original, and filled with spirited women, but I was wrong to claim that my great-grandmother once played for Clyde Football Club ["What Is Scotland?" NYR, November 20, 2008]. This honor in fact belonged to my great-grandfather Hector Lavery. He appears to have hung up his boots quite early and moved to Brooklyn, possibly at the insistence of the spirited woman in his life, who couldn't play football but could score goals when she took it into her head.
