Jonathan Lieberson Prize

The Columbia University Philosophy Department would like to announce the Jonathan Lieberson Memorial Prize in Philosophy. The prize provides $1000 to be awarded annually for an essay showing The Applicability of Moral or Scientific Theory or Both to a Social or Historical Issue.
The endowment for the prize has been contributed by friends of Jonathan Lieberson, who died in June 1989. Mr. Lieberson was both a student and a teacher of philosophy at Columbia University as well as a contributing editor of The New York Review of Books and the author of the collection Varieties.
The competition is open to graduate students in the Philosophy Department at Columbia University. The essays are to be from 5,000 to 10,000 words. The winner of the 1990 prize will be announced on December 15, 1990; essays for the 1990 competition are to be submitted to the Columbia University Philosophy Department by October 15, 1990.
