Alfred Chester's Revival

By Edward Field

In response to Every Eckermann His Own Man* (October 27, 1988)

To the Editors:

In the Anniversary issue of the NYR (October 27), Gore Vidal refers to the late Alfred Chester as a glorious writer. Yet ironically, his works have been out of print for years, and nearly unobtainable.

Perhaps the readers of the NYR might like to know that his novel The Exquisite Corpse has been reprinted by Carroll & Graf, with a splendid introduction by Diana Athill.
