In response to Whose American Renaissance?* (October 27, 1988)

To the Editors:

In his article "Whose American Renaissance?" [NYR, October 27], Frederick Crews refers interestingly and at length to an essay by Jonathan Arac on F.O. Matthiessen. The essay, "F.O. Matthiessen and American Studies," while out of print in the Johns Hopkins collection, is available in Arac's Critical Genealogies: Historical Situations for Postmodern Literary Studies (Columbia University Press, 1987).
