To the Editors:
In my piece "Angels of LA" [NYR, May 28, 1998], I implied that the late Howard Ahmanson, founder of the huge Home Savings empire, was among the many rich Jewish contributors Dorothy Chandler enlisted to support the building of the Los Angeles Music Center. Recently, in the course of independent reading, I learned that Mr. Ahmanson was a Christian, a fact confirmed by an editor of the Los Angeles Times and a member of the Music Center board. The error was mine, and I apologize for it.
