He Was French

By Robert Hughes

In response to Only in America* (December 20, 1979)

To the Editors:

A slip of memory, prompted by his Teutonic surname, made me assign German citizenship to the nineteenth-century art historian Eugene Muntz in my piece on Berenson [NYR, December 20]. He was in fact French. Moreover, your printer shifted a dash in a sentence about a genuine German art historian, which should have read "whose chief—and Berenson's lifelong enemy—was Wilhelm Bode…."
