Research from the May 18, 1967 issue

To the Editors:

Professor Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. has drawn my attention to a remark attributed to “his English publisher” (which I have the honour to be) by Mr. William Manchester and recently quoted in your columns.

I regret that the fact that I have been traveling in Australia and the Far East has prevented my being able to write earlier. I understand that Professor Schlesinger has already communicated to you the text of a cable which I sent to him on April 23rd and I would like to confirm now what I stated in this cable: during my conversation with Mr. Manchester about his book, The Death Of A President—and I had such a conversation—I did not speak the words attributed to me.
