It seems to me that Mr. Hodgart’s final fling [NYR, May 4 of “the wolf that one hears is worse than the orc that one fears” means little, as it was immediately challenged by Aragorn (a much stronger and more lordly figure than Borimer, who finally was corrupted by the Ring) with “But where the warg howls, there also the orc prowls.” It is not the wolves that are bad, it is the feeling of fear and power that goes with them.
