Conference of Vietnam

To the Editors:

There is growing awareness that U.S. involvement in Vietnam is an integral part of a more far-reaching effort to secure and expand U.S. hegemony in the Pacific. But as yet little is publicly known about the precise workings of U.S. political, military, and economic strategy in this area.

The undersigned organizations are co-sponsoring a conference on “U.S. Imperialism and the Pacific Rim” in Washington on November 13th and 14th, to develop better understanding of this strategy and to discuss means of opposing it.

The major speakers will be Franz Schurmann, scholar, writer and editor of works on Vietnam and China; Carol Brightman, an editor of “Leviathan”; and Makoto Oda, Japanese novelist and an organizer of Beheiren (Vietnam Peace Federation).

Scholars and researchers with special knowledge of Asian affairs will lead workshops on 1) U.S. involvement in specific Pacific Rim countries; 2) broad aspects of imperialist policy such as oil investment, foreign aid, U.S. military strategy and counterinsurgency; 3) the strategy and tactics of Asian anti-imperialist movements such as the Japanese Zengakuren and the Vietnamese NLF.

At the final session a Movement panel will discuss strategic perspectives for home-front action against U.S. imperialism in the Pacific Rim.

The conference begins on Thursday, November 13th, 7:30 P.M., at Douglas Memorial Church, 11th and H Streets, N.E., Washington, D.C. For further information, write the address below.
