September 26, 1988, is the centenary of T.S. Eliot’s birth. The London Library, of which Eliot was president for twelve years, is launching an appeal to celebrate the centenary of his birth. The monies collected will be used to help with the subscriptions of students and needy scholars who would otherwise be unable to benefit from the library’s facilities and to enable the library to buy books it could not otherwise afford. Among the patrons of the appeal are Valerie Eliot, Lord Annan, Sir Isaiah Berlin, Ted Hughes, Sir Stephen Spender, and Dame Iris Murdoch.
