I have just seen Michael P. Johnson’s review of Robert Fogel’s Without Consent Or Contract [NYR, December 21, 1989]. I thought that readers interested in this controversy might wish to know that the original article by Alfred H. Conrad and John R. Meyer, “The Economics of Slavery in the Ante-Bellum South,” which Johnson footnotes, was later published, along with further discussion, in Conrad and Meyer, The Economics of Slavery and Other Studies in Economic History (Aldine Publishing Co., 1964).
