Marie Syrkin Fellowship

To the Editors:

I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Marie Syrkin Fellowship in Letters in Jerusalem, in memory of the late Marie Syrkin, poet, essayist, teacher, and Zionist leader. The Fellowship will provide for a month’s residence for a writer in Jerusalem at Mishkenot Shaananim, the restored nineteenth-century “tranquil dwellings” opposite the Old City walls, as well as transportation costs. The Fellowship is open to writers in all the forms, though the judges will honor Marie Syrkin’s preference for belles lettres over scholarly research. The judges for 1991 are Irving Howe, Cynthia Ozick, and myself. Inquiries and applications should be sent to The Marie Syrkin Fellowship, 1220 19th Street NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20036.
