Irving Howe Memorial

The second annual Irving Howe Memorial Lecture will no doubt be of special interest to readers of The New York Review. Roger Shattuck of Boston University, the author of Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography, will speak on “The Alibi of Art” at 6 p.m. on November 20, 1997, in the auditorium of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York at 33 West 42nd Street. These lectures honor the late critic, editor, and political writer, who taught at the City University from 1963 to 1986. They are sponsored by the Center for the Humanities with support from the Irving Howe/CUNY Memorial Fund, established with a generous gift from Max Palevsky. The fund will ultimately provide for a graduate fellowship, a dissertation prize, and an annual lecture in Irving Howe’s memory.
