Irving Howe Memorial Lecture

The fourth annual Irving Howe Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Professor John Bayley of Oxford University on Tuesday, November 9, at 6 PM at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York at 365 Fifth Avenue. The subject is “Art and Invention: How Shakespeare and Pushkin Create Character.” John Bayley is a frequent contributor to The New York Review and the author of The Characters of Love, Tolstoy and the Novel, Elegy for Iris, and Iris and Her Friends, among many other books. These lectures honor the late critic, editor, and political writer, who taught at the City University from 1963 to 1986. They are sponsored by the Center of the Humanities and made possible by a generous gift from Max Palevsky.
