Professor Keith Burgess-Jackson, of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities in the University of Texas at Arlington, has called my attention to a glaring error in my review of the Lewis and Clark Journals [NYR, February 8]: it was Lewis, not Clark, who shot the second Piegan in the conflict that arose on July 27, 1805. Clark was way off on the Yellowstone River when that struggle occurred. I was writing another piece about Captain Clark when the galleys came and had him so in my head that I failed to notice the slip, for which I apologize.

Professor Burgess-Jackson also questioned the price of the atlas volume, which I received after the essay was published. The correct price is $200.
