To the Editors:

Your readers may be interested to know that the Russian poet Elena Shvarts has been selected as the 2001 Joseph Brodsky Memorial Fellowship Fund Fellow. She will travel to the Villa Medici in Rome and the University of Bologna this autumn.

The Brodsky Fellowships were founded when Mr. Brodsky approached the mayor of Rome in 1995 about establishing a Russian Academy in Rome to allow Russian artists, writers, and scholars periods of work and study in Italy. A group of his friends assembled after his death to carry on his idea, and began in 2000 to send Brodsky Fellows to Italy as guests of other institutions.

The Brodsky Fellowships are funded by private contributions, and we wish to thank the many readers of The New York Review who have helped to make Ms. Shvarts’s fellowship possible.
