To the Editors:

There are at least two errors in Lewis Lockwood’s review of books on Mendelssohn in your November 4 issue: Fanny wasn’t Felix’s younger sister—she was more than three years older; and they were two of Leah and Abraham’s four children, not six. These aren’t obscure facts; they’re clearly stated in at least one of the books Lockwood was reviewing.

Arthur Naiman

Lewis Lockwood replies:

Mr. Naiman is right on both points, and I take responsibility for these two factual errors.
