To the Editors:

Anthropologist Clifford Geertz of the Institute for Advanced Study will deliver the ninth annual Irving Howe Memorial Lecture. The subject is “What Was the Third World Revolution?” It will take place at 6:30 PM on Monday, November 15, in the Proshansky Auditorium of the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street). Professor Geertz’s books include The Interpretation of Cultures and Works and Lives. Sponsored by the Center for the Humanities, these lectures honor the late critic, editor, and political writer Irving Howe (1920–1993), who taught at the City University of New York. They are made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Max Palevsky and are free and open to the public. To register for this event, please call 212-817-8215.
