Pears Before Swine

To the Editors:

Please note the following corrections to my “The Great Art of Knowing” [NYR, October 7].

Owing to a printing error, ellipses in the Francesco Alberoni quote were dropped after the words “about” and “formulas.”

As my friend Michael Putnam has noted, “Solvitur acris hiems” is Horace I.4 (the misnumbering can be explained by the fact that I had recently been working with Propertius IV.2). And Augustine certainly proclaimed his pears “proicienda ad porcos.” Et ego proicienda sum.

Yours proicienda ad porcos,

Ingrid D. Rowland
