In response to:

Voices in the Dark from the February 10, 2005 issue

To the Editors:

The excellent review of Women Writing Africa [Hilary Mantel, “Voices in the Dark,” NYR, February 10] did not mention, nor should it have, that the Feminist Press, the book’s publisher, is the oldest surviving women’s press in the US (founded in 1970) and that Florence Howe, the press’s founder, had the vision to produce Women Writing Africa against extraordinary challenges. But appreciative readers may need reminding that independent small presses are struggling, and they need our support. Without the Feminist Press, this major project of cultural reconstruction would never have taken place.
