To the Editors:

Professor Robert Alter of the University of California at Berkeley will deliver the eleventh annual Irving Howe Memorial Lecture on Monday, October 30, at 6:30 PM in the Proshansky Auditorium of the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street). His subject is “The Enchantment of the Word: Language and the Study of Literature.” Professor Alter is the author of many books on biblical and modern literature, most recently an acclaimed translation of The Five Books of Moses. The Howe lectures honor the late critic, editor, and political writer Irving Howe (1920–1993), who taught at the City University of New York from 1963 to 1986. They are sponsored by the Center for the Humanities and made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Max Palevsky. The lectures are free and open to the public. For additional information please call (212) 817–2005.
