'They'd Much Rather Be Rich' from the November 22, 2007 issue
In regard to Andrew Hacker’s reply to a letter by Avner Offer in the last issue [“‘They’d Much Rather Be Rich,’” NYR, November 22], Professor Offer has written to say that in the passage of his book cited by Hacker he was referring to people living singly, not to cohabitors.
The photographs of Leo Tolstoy, his wife, Sophia, and his nieces Vera and Liza in Orlando Figes’s review of the new translation of War and Peace by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky [NYR, November 22] are from Leah Bendavid-Val’s Song Without Words: The Photographs and Diaries of Countess Sophia Tolstoy (National Geographic, 2007).
