On November 1 and 2, Social Research, the journal of the New School for Social Research in New York City, will host “Disasters: Recipes and Remedies.” Co-sponsored by the ACLU, this two-day conference will feature leading scientists, writers, and scholars in public dialogue about the conditions that amplify or reduce the effects of disasters. The conference will consider who is most affected by them and why, and what can be done to lessen the likelihood and the magnitude of disasters in the future. Events include a keynote by Nicholas Scoppetta, the New York City fire commissioner, at 6 PM on November 1. More information is available at www.newschool.edu/disasters.
