To the Editors:

Since my father, I.F. Stone (1907–1989), was a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, readers may be interested to know that on March 5, the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard

University announced the establishment of the I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence, which will be awarded annually to “a journalist or news executive whose work exemplifies the independent spirit of I.F. Stone, as well as the qualities of integrity, courage, and indefatigability that characterized I.F. Stone’s Weekly.” The presentation of the medal will be accompanied each year by a workshop on strengthening journalistic independence.

Readers who want to learn more about the award—or about I.F. Stone—can turn to a newly constructed Web site, www.ifstone.org.
