The footnote to Alison Lurie’s article on the books of Maurice Sendak [“‘Something Wonderful Out of Almost Nothing,’” NYR, July 12] is surely not correct in implying that Belloc illustrated his own Cautionary Tales and other of his comic verse for children. The artist for early editions was not Belloc himself but Basil Blackwood, as B.T.B. Their manner may not be accomplished but seems to suit the tone, mocking rather than admonitory, of the verses, which are proclaimed to be for children.
