January Classics
Our first releases of the year are by authors well known to NYRB Classics readers. The Traveller’s Tree by Patrick Leigh Fermor is “still the best piece of travel writing on the Caribbean” (The Guardian) and Conquered City by Victor Serge is a tragic novel of revolutionary terror. Both of these January books, as well as all NYRB Classics by Patrick Leigh Fermor and Victor Serge, are available at a limited-time 25% discount.
Conquered City
By Victor SergeTranslated from the French and with a
foreword by Richard Greeman

Set in post-Russian-Revolutionary St. Petersburg, Conquered City is structured like a detective story in which the new political regime tracks down and eliminates its enemies—the spies, speculators, and traitors hidden among the mass of common people.
In this novel about terror, the city’s new masters seek to cement their control, even as the counterrevolutionary White Army regroups. The Communists pick up the weapons of power—police, guns, jail, spies, treachery—in the doomed gamble that, by wielding them righteously, they can put an end to the need for terror. Conquered City is their tragedy and testament.

The Traveller’s Tree
A Journey Through the Caribbean Islands
By Patrick Leigh FermorIntroduction by Joshua Jelly-Schapiro
![]() |
In the late 1940s, Patrick Leigh Fermor set out to explore the Caribbean islands. In The Traveller’s Tree, his first book, he presents his own vivid, idiosyncratic impressions of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Martin, St. Thomas, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba. Costa, a Greek painter and photographer whose photographs are included in the book, and Joan, who two decades later was to become Leigh Fermor’s wife, travel with him on a picaresque adventure where we meet an incredible host of characters and societies.
