Bernard Haitink and the Vienna Philharmonic at the Proms
From early July to early September London hosts “the greatest music festival in the world,” the seventy-six concerts of the BBC Proms, with a season standing ticket costing less than a single stalls seat at Salzburg. This season has ranged from the Beethoven symphonies under Daniel Barenboim to the Glyndebourne Figaro to My Fair Lady. But the most eagerly awaited is Prom 73 on Thursday September 6, when Bernard Haitink conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony, preceded by Murray Perahia playing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Anyone who doubts that the eighty-three-year-old Haitink is our greatest living Brucknerian can hear the concert streamed live in HD Sound on the Radio 3 web site, or through the website of any affiliate of American Public Media such as Minnesota Public Radio.
Bernard Haitink and the Vienna Philharmonic will perform at 2 PM EST. For more information on tickets and live broadcasts, visit bbc.co.uk.
