‘The Death of Mr. Lazarescu’

Cristi Puiu’s second feature devotes two and a half hours to a sixty-two-year-old pensioner’s final trip to the hospital; although highly scripted, it’s shot like a documentary, with the filmmaker successfully simulating—or better, orchestrating—the institutional texture of a Frederick Wiseman vérité. This ode to mortality—the key work of the new Romanian cinema—is not without a certain grim humor one might call deadpan.

Showing at 8:45 PM on Friday, August 31 and 5 PM on Sunday, September 2. Tickets are available at the box office or online at [www.filmlinc.com] (http://www.filmlinc.com/films/on-sale/nyff-05-the-death-of-mr.-lazarescu).
