‘Gebo and the Shadow’
The most recent film by the ageless Manoel de Oliveira, still active at 104, is a straightforward adaptation of a mordant chamber drama concerning a wayward son’s return; its actual subject is what Jean Cocteau called “mort-au-travail,” cinema’s capacity to show death at work. The big effect is the presence of veteran international stars Claudia Cardinale (seventy-four), Jeanne Moreau (eighty-four), and Michel Lonsdale (eighty-one). The camera is static, the takes are lengthy—this ode to mortality addresses its subject head-on.
