The original studio-destroying extravaganza, D.W. Griffith’s supreme triumph and career debacle cuts between four historical epochs—the Fall of Babylon, the St. Bartholomew Day Massacre, the Passion of Christ, and a modern story of a wrongly accused man—for nearly three hours, bringing them all to a more or less simultaneous climax. Even after ninety-eight years, it’s a remarkable demonstration of cinematic might.
