Lame Brains and Lunatics: Cruel and Unusual Comedy

Cubistic in their assault on ordinary perception, the silent two-reelers in this MoMA series are at least as modern (which is to say, as zippy, alienated, and weird) as the paintings upstairs. The exuberantly cretinous Larry Semon, a Surrealist favorite, is prominent, along with lanky Max Davison, and Laurel and Hardy (appearing together, separately, and cloned by imitators). The titles of the five programs—“Mating Rituals,” “Movie Mania,” “Food Fight,” “Police Brutality,” and “Recreational Hazards”—give some idea of the mayhem.

Tickets are free with admission to the museum. A full schedule is available online.
