LoftOpera Summer Sessions
Before they return to opera in the fall, the young, Brooklyn-based company LoftOpera presents two song cycles. Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen describe the heartbreak of a lonely wanderer. Hector Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été is based on poems by Theophile Gautier about the loss of innocence and the difficulties of love. The production will be fully staged, with a thirty-piece orchestra. Both song cycles suggest the possibility that love, like the warm summer months, may not last—a thought worth considering as August comes to a close.
