‘The Missing Picture’

Cambodian documentary filmmaker Rithy Panh uses stock footage, first-person voiceover narration, and (mainly) hundreds of carved wood figures, set in miniature forced labor camps, to dramatize his childhood under the Khmer Rouge. Nominated for an Oscar and winner of the Un Certain Regard prize last May at Cannes, it’s a unique and haunting form of (non) animation—as if the dead reappeared as mute and stoical witnesses, the world as reconstructed in a prisoner’s cell.

The Missing Picture was reviewed by Richard Bernstein on the NYRblog in October 2013. For a schedule of showtimes, and to purchase tickets, please visit Film Forum’s website.
