‘Philip Roth Unleashed’

Alan Yentob, a veteran of BBC arts broadcasting, has for twenty years been trying to make a program in which he interviews Philip Roth. He finally gets his wish with Philip Roth Unleashed, to be shown in two hour-long parts on consecutive Tuesdays—May 20 and May 27—on the network’s most popular channel, BBC One. “Now that I don’t write,” Roth tells him at the beginning, “I just want to chatter away.” The first episode finds Roth on relaxed form, chuckling fondly when Yentob reads out some of the dirty bits from Portnoy’s Complaint (“I’m a distinguished writer of eighty, must you dredge up my past?”); and taking obvious pleasure in the ruminations about Israel from Operation Shylock (“That’s very good, who wrote that?”).
