Queer Pagan Punk: The Films of Derek Jarman
An unclassifiable film artist—part Pre-Raphaelite aesthete, part avant-garde militant, a frenzied, literary master of low-budget panache—Jarman began his career with a Latin-language, male-nude tribute to Saint Sebastian and followed it up with the punk musical Jubilee. He adapted Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, and made idiosyncratic biographies of Caravaggio and Wittgenstein. Jarman had an apocalyptic imagination long before he tested HIV positive: his most radical films are the feverishly kinetic The Last of England and the boldly monochromatic Blue, both featuring Tilda Swinton. Organized on the twentieth anniversary of Jarman’s death, this near complete retrospective opens with a portrait of the artist orchestrated by Isaac Julien.
