Enjoying a heightened visibility thanks to Geoff Dyer’s book-length appreciation, Andrei Tarkovsky’s last Soviet film is as much environment as narrative. To the degree that this amazingly crafted exercise in anti-science fiction has a plot, it’s the mock-epic odyssey of two less-than-attractive Russian intellectuals, guided by a tormented fool with the shaven head and dirty rags of a gulag inmate to the heart of a polluted, post-apocalyptic government-restricted area called the Zone.
