Barbara Grover

‘This Is Hunger’

The photographer Barbara Grover has taken pictures of Darfuri refugees in Chad, gay communities in Cuba, advocates against gang violence in El Salvador, and Palestinian refugees in the West Bank. Recently she was commissioned by the nonprofit group MAZON to produce a series of photographs about hunger in contemporary America. Those pictures form the basis of This Is Hunger, an immersive and unorthodox exhibition that encourages audience participation and community engagement. In a large expandable trailer that travels from city to city, viewers sit at a communal table around which Grover’s pictures are projected while recorded testimonies from their subjects are played. Viewers are then asked to share their responses to the pictures in group discussions. Forthcoming stops on the tour include St. Louis, Cleveland, and Milwaukee.

Two images from ‘This Is Hunger’ accompany Jeff Madrick’s article in the June 22 issue of the Review. For more information and a full schedule of destinations, visit thisishunger.org.
