The Vertigo Effect
This wide-ranging series pays homage to the cinephile film supreme, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 Vertigo, with a number of direct and indirect homages—among them Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962) and Sans Soleil (1983), Francois Truffaut’s Mississippi Mermaid (1969), the psychedelic giallo remake Perversion Story (1969), Brian De Palma’s Obsession (1974), Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys (1995), and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001). Two moody melodramas, Laura (1944) and Portrait of Jennie (1948), are precursors; Chantal Akerman’s exemplary Proust adaptation La Captive (2000) and José Luis Guerín’s charming In the City of Sylvia (2007) are well chosen analogues, as is Ernie Gehr’s San Francisco-set Side/Walk/Shuttle (1991), an avant-garde film that could have deservedly been named “Vertigo.”
