Werner Schroeter: Magnificent Obsessions

Werner Schroeter’s 1971 Death of Maria Malibran, showing in a glorious archival 16mm print, opens a three-month retrospective devoted to the missing link between the New York underground and West Germany’s neue kino. Schroeter’s most visionary movies—the willfully crude, aggressively campy low-budget opera-travesties he made in the late 1960s and early 1970s—were a significant influence on both Fassbinder and Syberberg; the threadbare extravagance of Schroeter’s mise-en-scene was equaled (and toughened) by a montage whose rhythmic originality can be compared to that of Stan Brakhage.
