The Act of Killing’

Human rights activist Joshua Oppenheimer’s provocative documentary shows now-aged veterans of the mid-Sixties slaughter that brought the Suharto regime to power in Indonesia, playfully restaging the mass murder of “communist” villagers as entertainment—sometimes musical. Hamming wildly for the camera, these former gangsters are inanely proud of their work, with filmmaker as a horrified accomplice.

Opens in New York on July 19 and in Los Angeles and Washington on July 26, with other cities to follow. A complete schedule and list of theaters is available online.
