Taking off from Japanese novelist Junichiro Tanizaki’s celebrated essay “In Praise of Shadow,” this innovative series looks at cinematic lighting, juxtaposing Japanese films from the 1920s and 1930s with the American movies that influenced them, including Josef von Sternberg’s Docks of New York; the cinematographer Soichi (Henry) Kotani, who worked in early Hollywood before returning to Japan, is a significant figure.
