Art Theater Guild and Japanese Underground Cinema, 1960-1986
Every year or so there’s a retrospective so comprehensive and rich with little-seen work as to jeopardize one’s day job attempting to catch every show. MoMA’s “Art Theater Guild,” organized to coincide with the museum’s no less over stimulating exhibit “Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant-Garde,” includes some seventy films made for the independent production company that revitalized Japanese cinema, including experimental works by Nagisa Oshima, Shohei Imamura, and Koji Wakamatsu.
Tickets are free with admission to the museum. For a full schedule of screenings, see MoMA's website.
