The loveliest of Kubrick films—indeed, the lone Kubrick movie to invite that adjective—Barry Lyndon (1975) was also the only movie ever reviewed by art critic Harold Rosenberg. (He didn’t much care for it but thought it better than Thackeray’s novel.) This cerebral, melancholy action film could be Kubrick’s masterpiece; it certainly represents the height of his craft.
